Bundling home and auto: when it saves money and when it does not

Almost every insurance ad promises savings when you bundle. For many San Antonio families that promise holds up. Discounts of 10% to 25% on one or both policies are common. But we also see households that pay more by forcing everything under one carrier. The right answer depends on the numbers, not the ad.

Why carriers reward bundles

Customers with several policies stay longer and file fewer claims per policy on average, so carriers price that loyalty into a multi-policy discount. Many also offer a single deductible when one event, like a hailstorm, damages both your home and your car.

When bundling usually wins

  • Your drivers have clean records and your home has a newer roof.
  • You want one renewal date, one app and one claim contact.
  • You are adding an umbrella policy, which often requires or rewards matching carriers.
  • The carrier offers a combined wind and hail deductible across home and auto.

When separate carriers can be cheaper

Some carriers are excellent at pricing auto but strict about older roofs. Others love a newer home but rate young drivers heavily. If you have a teen driver, a recent accident, a roof over 15 years old or a home near a flood zone, splitting policies can beat the bundle discount.

We regularly run both scenarios. In a recent sample comparison for a Schertz family with two cars and a 12-year-old roof, the best bundle was $5,480 a year while the best split was $5,120. In another sample for an Alamo Heights couple with a new roof, the bundle saved $690 compared with separate policies.

Look beyond the premium

A few hundred dollars matters, but so do the details that show up at claim time:

  • Home policy roof valuation and wind and hail deductible.
  • Auto liability limits and uninsured motorist coverage.
  • Whether the carrier has a local adjuster network after major storms.
  • Billing options that fit your budget, such as monthly payments without big fees.

Try the sample estimator

Our bundle savings estimator gives a quick sample range based on the policies you carry today. It is not a quote, but it is a helpful starting point before a real comparison. When you are ready, one short conversation lets us price both options with actual carriers.

Whichever way the numbers fall, we will show you both side by side in plain language, in English or Spanish. Discount percentages and sample totals in this article are illustrations and vary by carrier and household.
